Efforts to get guns off the streets are not uncommon. In Orlando, police thought it'd be a good idea to exchange shoes for guns without asking any questions, and see what they could get. They got a missile launcher.
A man went and turned in a missile launcher, receiving as reward a pair of shoes. Because of course, what good is a missile launcher if your feet hurt from carrying it around?
Police also got over 250 guns off the streets with this initiative, giving out shoes or gift certificates for 50 dollars. Which takes us to the conclusion that yes, it is completely true that there are a whole lot of armed idiots out there.
